What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

The term capsule wardrobe was coined in the 1970s by a London boutique owner. The phrase has evolved over time to mean a collection of clothing that can be mix and matched together to maximize the number of outfits that can be created. At Outfit Formulas every capsule wardrobe begins with classic basic closet staples that are always in style. Then we add current trend pieces into our seasonal capsule wardrobes to keep your look up to date.

Why is it called outfit formulas?

Outfit Formulas is our easy way to get dressed every morning. Just follow the formula and you’ll have an instant outfit in no time! Think of it like a recipe to whip up your favorite meal but using clothes and outfits instead. It’s the simple way to get out of your comfort zone and try new styles.

How does this differ from Stitch Fix?

The main difference between Outfit Formulas® and Stitch Fix is we don’t provide the clothes. We give you all the tools you need to shop for and create your own capsule wardrobe. You get to choose the budget, shop at your favorite stores, and spend as much or as little as you want! The program even works with Stitch Fix, some of the pieces you get in your monthly box may work in the daily outfits.

Do the capsule wardrobes build on each other or will I have to buy all new clothes each time?

Each seasonal capsule wardrobe guide builds on classic closet staples and pieces from prior seasons so you should never have to do as much shopping as might be required the very first time. After participating in a few seasons of Outfit Formulas® many women are almost able to completely ‘shop their closets’ saving them both time and money! Any purchases they do decide to make are often a ‘want’, not a ‘need’.

What ages and sizes does this work for?

Our members include women of every age and stage of life. Most of our members are between the ages of 35-65 and range from size 0 to plus sizes, including petite and tall fit. Outfit Formulas® truly work for everybody and every body!

Are these all casual outfits or can I wear them to work too?

The seasonal Outfit Formulas® are mostly casual outfits but can be easily dressed up or down – we even provide tips to help you do this. From time to time there are also a few dressier options included, particularly around the holidays. If you’re looking for office-appropriate outfits, we recommend checking out our Work Wear Closet Staples Capsule Wardrobe.

Does the shopping list include plus size options?

Yes, plus size options are included for all items on the shopping list.

What stores are included for the shopping list's recommended items?

We include stores from a variety of online retailers at varying price points that work for every budget. You’re also welcome to shop for similar items at your favorite stores. We strongly encourage you to shop your closet first!

I don't live in the US, will this work for me?

Yes! We’ve had women in over 20 countries participate including Canada, the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Australia, Finland and others. Although most of the retailers are US based on the shopping list, there are options that work for other countries. We also have participants in our Facebook group from other countries who share shopping tips and advice.

What if I don't like the color palette? Can I choose my own?

Absolutely, we actually encourage this! We make it as easy as possible to choose your own color palette by providing color coordination rules for each piece on the list. As long as you follow the rules, your pieces will coordinate! Many women “go rogue” and choose the colors that work best for them. I heard you have an annual membership. When can I sign up for it?

Our annual membership option is a great way to get all four seasons of Outfit Formulas® at the best-discounted price — not to mention other perks like sneak peeks, early access, exclusive sales, and more! Enrollment to pre-order the upcoming year typically opens in early December and closes in early March. Your membership begins with the Spring Capsule Wardrobe of that year.
